Eat Local Food - Join the CSA

Did you know?

Supporting your local CSA program has many benefits besides supporting local farmers (even though that's the best reason in our opinion!).

  • Buying CSA shares strengthens our local food system by creating stable revenue streams for farms.
  • Getting local food through CSAs cuts your food miles (carbon footprint) - our CSA has less than 100 miles on the food you get.
  • CSAs encourage sustainability in farming, eating, and food systems.  Sustainability is tantamount to food security.
  • Using CSA shares on a regular basis increases your fruit and vegetable consumption
  • CSAs make getting local food convenient!  We bring the food right to you!

Here's what you need to know about the 2012 CSA program.

Start Eating Local today!  Sign up anytime and we will prorate your account if the season has started already.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way of purchasing food that helps build a sustainable local food system in the process. By sharing some of the risk, the work, and the commitment with the farmers, you are helping us take great steps forward in rebuilding that system here in the Charlotte region. Know Your Farms handles the marketing, administration, and delivery of the CSA shares so that the farmers can focus on growing the food.

Registration is now open. (Well, we always have a share for you! Just sign up and we will get you started!)

  • Winter 2012 CSA runs from January through early-March 2012.
  • Spring 2012 CSA runs from mid-April through June 2012.
  • Summer 2012 CSA runs from July through September 2012.
  • Fall 2012 CSA runs from October through December 2012.
  • Each small share is designed to supplement (1-2 people) * can vary significantly depending on your consumption habits
  • Large shares typically supplement (2-4 people) *  can vary significantly depending on your consumption habits
  • Shares include vegetarian items only: vegetables, grains, fruits, and occasionally condiments.
  • Beef, pork, and poultry shares are available as add-ons to produce shares.  All meats are hormone and anti-biotic free.
  • Egg shares are available as an add-on and include a half-dozen or full dozen free-range eggs from local farms.
  • Produce will not always come from the same farm; weekly produce suppliers will be noted on our blog (http://knowyourfarms.blogspot.com).
  • Primary growers are Barbee Farms, KC Farms, Cottonmill Mushrooms, Commonwealth Farms, and Davis & Son Orchard. Secondary growers include a dozen other farms in the area, and a handful, such as Anson Mills, that are a little further out.
  • Food is not necessarily organic, but is grown by farmers that seek to use sustainable methods. Profiles of the farmers are available on our website so you can know more about their methods.
  • We do not plan to deliver the week of Thanksgiving or the last two weeks in December.
  • Distribution will occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Concord, Davidson, Plaza-Midwood, South Park, Dilworth, and Ballantyne. Specific times and locations are available on our website under the schedule section.
  • Members are responsible for picking up their share on time; failure to do so will result in your share being donated to a needy family.
  • Members are responsible for returning a box at pickup each week; failure to do so will result in a $5 fee to cover the cost and time of replacing the box.
  • In the event that a life change (moving, change in income, etc.) requires you to cancel your membership, we will calculate the cost of the food already delivered and deduct that and a $100 cancellation fee from your refund.
  • We will also deliver to businesses if they have 10 or more employees who agree to sign up for the CSA program.  Please contact us for additional information. This is a convenient way to get your shares delivered directly to your place of work each week!
